Martinique Grigg, executive director of the Mountaineers…, a Seattle-based nonprofit for outdoor education,…recommended the iHikeGPS app (... iOS only), which lets you download topographical maps of the entire U.S. before you set out, so you can use it even without cellular service.” - Wall Street Journal

We Get Email:“Last night I downloaded your iPhone app iHikeGPS. I want to tell you I am VERY impressed!!! … Thanks for making such a superb app. It pretty much blows… , my previous fave GPS app, out of the water. Your track recording feature, fast map downloads, and well thought out interface make it a real winner. It's very sophisticated software, and makes my iPhone just about as good as $600 Garmin Montana. Actually better, in a lot of ways.” - John in Oregon
“The app is working fine for me! This will be an excellent tool on this summer's trip to Alaska. Thanks for the excellent work! I've been "showing it off" to many friends!” - Brian in New York
“I have all of the true USGS topographic map apps (to my knowledge) and this is the ONLY one that will make a true, accurate track! Indispensable for making and verifying topographic maps of unmapped hiking trails! The other apps make trackpoints about every 1 minute which is just totally unacceptable. iHikeGPS produces trackpoints about every 2-4 seconds… this is the only USGS topographic-map displaying app so far that does the very basics of GPS very well. I love the ability to easily view the elevation changes of a track with a decent y-axis that doesn't obscure the data.” - azurerain
“Nice to see the iHike app. I applaud what it can do, what it needs to and little else. No junk, great work. I like the concept the best of any of the “Waypoint” apps I've seen and own.” - Charles in Georgia
“I am LOVING iHikeGPS. I'm a Jeeper & this is working really well in Calif.” - Dave in California
“What a fantastic job. I show it off to every one I can. I finally go to take it on a hike, it works great.” - Richard in Michigan
“GREAT APP! I have been using this for a few weeks now and am really loving the interface, the maps and the features you've provided. I will be featuring it in a workshop I'm leading on March 31 at Travis Audubon called "Intro to Birding Apps for Smart Phones". Being able to leave a "breadcrumb" trail will come in very handy for birders!” - Laurie in Texas
“Wow, iHikeGPS is really well done. You can download maps for free directly to the app using WiFi or 3G and you can just tell it to get the map for your current location and uses the GPS fix to get the highest resolution USGS topo map instantly. Or you can choose any location and it will choose the map for you. He has the entire USGS 24K and all the USFS topo maps in his database and they are all free with purchase of the app. Also it saves .gpx files of your tracks and you can send them by email.…makes the iPhone (or iPad) actually useful as a hiking GPS.” - Yooper on forum.ih8mud.com
“During a recent vacation trip up the Maine coast, even though we weren't hiking, my wife and I found iHike GPS invaluable for finding and navigating little back roads and discovering the interesting sites along them. We were doing a lot of birding, and promising spots are often easy to pick out on USGS maps. But there's no way I could have bought printed topo maps for all the territory we covered, often without planning ahead, and using paper maps in the car would have been quite inconvenient. Having dozens of them on my iPad (at no cost!) was fantastic. Thanks for a wonderful addition to my software arsenal and vacation toolkit.” - Eric in Massachusetts

Although this app charges a one-time fee, it allows you to download and have access to all USA topographic maps for the rest of your life. You can e-mail your waypoints or current location for those times when you get lost in the wilderness or need to report your location. Perfect for anyone camping, fishing, and hiking, it'll provide great detail when you need it the most. It's a great app for anyone takes the great outdoors seriously.” - David on news.handhelditems.com

“I have nothing but good things to say about iHikeGPS - getting maps is easy - it works smoothly (at least I haven’t had any problems) - it emails waypoints and tracks - in short it does what it says it is going to do and it does them very well.” - Art in Texas
“I just wanted to thank you for developing IHIKEGPS and to tell you what a great product it is. I am impressed! You have done a terrific job in developing this app. It works well and the downloaded maps are a super plus in the back country with no cell or WIFI available. I use it hiking, biking, skiing, and Jeeping. It works so well it makes me want to get an ipad…” - Ammon in Colorado

“I purchased both iHike and iSail apps this year and they are TERRIFIC! They were easy to download and easy to use... I used iHike in Colorado while horseback riding in the Gunnison National Forest. The trails were unmarked and I used iHike extensively to track my path into the forest. With the path recorded on the app, it was much easier finding my way back home! And, yes, of course, I also carry hard copy maps and a compass with me. But this app greatly enhances my abilities to navigate and to travel "off the grid" safely. Thanks for making such great apps!” - Tim in Massachusetts |
